It was a pleasure to represent our JLD at the national conference of junior lawyers divisions, which took place virtually on the 10th June 2023. Members of the conference were excited to hear about the formation of our JLD, being the newest to the round table. Born and bred in Halifax, I also took great pride in giving the members of the conference a mini history lesson about Kirklees and Calderdale, as well as the ever growing legal sector of the West Ridings.
The conference was chaired by Daria Dybov who was equally excited to hear about our launch event and opened the discussion to the members of the conference. Fellow JLD representatives shared their success stories and gave us an abundance of helpful ‘tips’ for our own event, some of which were successfully implemented at our launch event.
Daria led the discussion on to how essential JLD’s are to the overall legal industry in the UK, sharing details of all the exciting initiatives which are currently being discussed, to ensure we are catering to the needs of every junior lawyer and law student. The members were all keen to hear about the different types of events thought up by our own Georgia Holding (events organiser) and were very keen to pool ideas.
Following the evolution of the now, ever expanding routes into law, a big focus of the conference was around reforming The Law Society’s ‘Aspiring Solicitors’ programme. As the legal profession further evolves into the 21st century, The Law Society are keen to ensure that the support they offer to junior legal professionals and law students, through the JLD’s, are exemplary. It was exciting to hear how integral this was to The Law Society’s agenda and we look forward to supporting The Law Society in progressing this.
The annual JLD conference takes place this year on the 9th September 2023 at The Law Society in London. I look forward to meeting all of the other national representatives, and discussing how we can further build bridges between our respective JLD’s to give all our members the best experience.
