June is an exciting month; it marks the start of warmer weather and the return of rainbows. Yes, yes, I know they can occur any time of year, but as we all know June is Pride month - which means it is time for every company and their Instagram feed to don rainbows and celebrate inclusivity and love for all.
Whilst I am not one for labels, it seems only fitting that if I am going to speak about Pride then I ought to provide mine here. So, if asked, I’ll say I’m Bi. That was the only one out of the three options available to me as a teenager that somewhat fit. Back in the good old days of Myspace and MSN, yes I’m old please move on, we only had straight, gay/lesbian or Bi. Going by the current list of labels, I am actually Pansexual but for me Bi work’s just as well as a label if I have to have one.
Anyway, that was not the point of this piece. What I wanted to talk about was being comfortable as yourself, who you are and who you are (or are not) attracted to. Whether you’re out, loud and proud, or a bit more reserved, there is space for everyone.
Dates for your diary:
17 June: Kirklees Pride from 1-8pm at St George’s Square (outside the train station in Huddersfield).
15 July: Dewsbury Pride from 12-9pm at The Leggers Inn
19 August: Calderdale Pride, time unknown, at The Piece Hall
Ways to show your pride at work/university:
1. Upgrade your lanyard with a pride themed badge, or better yet upgrade completely to a pride themed lanyard. I can hear Etsy singing it’s siren song as I type…
2. Add subtle pops of your flag’s colours into your wardrobe. Don’t as me how I know, but if you did want to go all out you can pick up an entirely rainbow suit from Amazon.. though I wouldn’t recommend wearing this for an attended hearing. I reckon a rainbow tie would be acceptable to the Judge though.
3. Decorate your desk for pride. I love a little desk décor, I currently have: a mini lego Charizard, bear/fox/hedgehog ornament, pen cauldron and photos of my many animals adorning my own. *adds mini pride flag to my amazon basket*
Lastly, I’m sure there might be some of you reading who are ‘still in the closet’ so to speak… if you feel like you need any support then please look at this link which contains a list of all the local support that is available:
