Now the Christmas period is over and we enter a New Year, you are probably thinking about your new years resolution of securing a Training Contract (and no doubt getting very stressed out at the thought of it!). Training Contract applications are something that the majority of our JLD committee have been through, and we therefore want to share our top 3 tips as to how best to keep your cool and get those applications submitted.
It may sound simple, but being organized is pivotal when it comes to Training Contract applications. With so many firms all having different deadlines, how on earth are you meant to keep up?! Well, buying a calendar might be a good start!
Make a list of each firm you want to apply to together with a note of every deadline so you know exactly how much time you have to submit your application and aren’t rushing it the night before, when you are just about to fall asleep and realize the deadline is in fact the day after!
The majority of people that graduate from University with their law degree want nothing more than a Training Contract, it doesn’t matter where or when or how, all they know is that is their goal. However, researching the firms you are applying for is a really beneficial thing to do.
A training contract is tough, there is no doubt about that, but training at a firm that is right for you, in an environment where you know you will thrive, is only ever going to set you up for success when it comes to qualification.
Check out individual firms websites and talk to anyone you may know who works there beforehand.
This. This is the most important thing when it comes to most aspects in life, not just applying for a Training Contract.
Do not put too much pressure on yourself, all you can do is your best right? What if you get declined from a firm you really wanted to train at, but this leads to another door opening and a potential for an assistant/paralegal role at that firm? That is still a massive success and will only benefit you when it comes to next year’s applications.
Remember, every application gives you experience – may that be experience in tailoring your CV or cover letter or interview experience, it is all beneficial.
